Spiritual awakening

“The moment you become aware of the ego in you, it is strictly speaking no longer the ego, but just an old, conditioned mind-pattern. Ego implies unawareness. Awareness and ego cannot coexist.”
― Eckhart Tolle

Spiritual awakening is connecting to your spirit, your higher self. I used to go around telling people I was spiritual.  It was part of my shtick.  My gimmick.  I walked around with prayer beads around my wrist while wearing my hippie clothing and told anyone who would listen to me that I was spiritual and not religious.

I did this because I thought it made me sound (and look) cool.  Like I was a spiritual gangster that had everything figured out.  Truth be told I had no spiritual practice and I had no idea what I was talking about.

What I was doing was hiding behind a mask.  I was the every changing chameleon who would be whatever or whoever you wanted me to be.  Spirituality?  I had no idea what that word even meant.   I believe these questions are important to us as we start our spiritual journey:

  1. So what exactly is spirituality?
  2. What’s the difference between spirituality and religion?
  3. What is high vibration?
  4. How do I vibrate at a higher vibration?
Spiritual awakening

1. So what exactly is spiritual awakening ?

Spiritual awakening means, looking at myself truly without judgement. I know its hard not to judge one’s self but that is the first step to spirituality. After, this everything else falls into place, the connection between you and your soul grows, the more you take the time to dwell in silence. It’s about being for once concerned more with your spirit as opposed to just hustling.

When we do this we open ourselves up to a higher state of consciousness.  The shtick that I mentioned above was the exact opposite.  It was me running away from my repressed traumatic childhood.  Trust me, the last thing I wanted to do was go within myself and deal with my feelings.

2. What’s the difference between spirituality and religion?

Religion usually has something to do with defined beliefs where as spirituality is more individual.  It has to do with your spirit.  It’s about being human.

I wasn’t raised with spirituality or religion, it was the exact opposite.  It was a childhood of deprivation and punishment.  I learned at a very young age that there was something wrong with me and in order to survive I had to put on a mask and hide behind a perception of who I thought you wanted me to be.

The problem with living life this way is that it doesn’t work.  My best thinking (at the time) told me that I needed people to like me in order to feel good about myself.  It also told me I had to make a certain amount of money or else I wasn’t good enough.  My wiring wasn’t right.

I chased everything and everyone to make me feel better and it was never enough.  I did the same thing over and over again expecting different results but they never came.  That’s the definition of insanity, right?

Eventually, I got tired of my shtick and turned the only place left to turn, inward.  I went within and faced my fears.  I went within and found liberation through my darkness.  Talk about freeing! When you go within and become mindful of who you really are you automatically start to operate at a higher vibration.

3. What is high vibration?

High vibration is usually associated with people that are self-reflective and have a good grasp of their feelings.  It’s associated with people who live in the present moment, practice gratitude, and  those who take responsibility for their own life.  People who vibrate at a high frequency are authentic and know what they want.

Going within is being honest about how I’m feeling rather than self-destructive ways of taking care of myself (my old way).  I realize now that the only way out of a low state of being is facing that situation and not hiding in my case behind bottles of vodka and random sex. Having fun is great but for the right reasons and knowing one’s limit. Self-destructive behaviours bring our vibration low.

In summary be present and learn to appreciate the little things, in time you build a habit and when you feel low or when your vibration is low, you can remember or see the little and big things in life and feel grateful. This feeling of gratitude will raise your vibration.

4. How do I vibrate at a higher vibration?

The moment you go within or start to “feel grateful” for the little things in life like your smile, health, your clean glass of water etc the higher you vibrate. I gave up television and video games and started a yoga practice.  I get up every morning, put on my stylish spiritual clothes that I got from consciousbuzz.com and centre myself.

Vibrating at a high vibration is me seeing the gifts all around me.  Seeing every opportunity as a chance to develop and grow.  In the past, an internet outage at home would send me into a place of resentment but if I’m vibrating at a high vibration I can see it as an opportunity for me to learn and grow.  That’s a gift.

A friend of mine recently called me a spiritual gangster and I laughed because of everything I’ve been through.  But he’s right.  I am a spiritual gangster and I’ve come full circle.

Today I have an actual spiritual practice.  I meditate every morning and connect to a power greater than myself, I’m open and honest in all areas of my life, I lead groups of men through recovery in different areas of their lives, and I show up without a shtick.  What you see is what you get.  This is me operating at my highest possible vibration, authentic and real, and I owe it all to going within.
